How to Study for the Texas Journeyman Exam

The candidates who pass on the first try do three things differently:

  1. 1

    Start with a diagnostic

Don't start by reading the NEC cover to cover. Take a free diagnostic quiz first to find out which categories you're weak in — then study those.

  2. 2

    Drill calculations until they're automatic

The Calculations portion is where most candidates fail. Work through our voltage drop, box fill, and conductor sizing walkthroughs until you can solve them without looking.

  3. 3

    Practice with real exam-style questions

Every question in our bank is written in the PSI format with a direct NEC code reference. Our study plan guide breaks down a proven 8-week schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Texas journeyman electrician practice test really free?

Yes. The 10-question diagnostic quiz is completely free, no signup required. You get instant results, category breakdowns, and NEC code references for every question. If you want more practice, the full 800-question bank is available with a 7-day free trial.

What is the format of the Texas journeyman electrician exam?

As of March 2025, TDLR split the exam into two separately scored portions: 59 NEC Knowledge questions (130 minutes) and 26 Calculations questions (110 minutes). You must pass both portions independently — a strong score on one does not compensate for a weak score on the other.

Which NEC edition does the Texas journeyman exam cover?

The Texas journeyman exam currently references the 2026 NEC. TDLR updates the adopted edition periodically — check tdlr.texas.gov or your candidate information bulletin before your test date to confirm.

Can I bring my NEC codebook to the exam?

Yes, the Texas journeyman exam is open-book. You can bring the NEC codebook, but it must be unmarked — tabs and highlighting are generally allowed, but handwritten notes are not. PSI will inspect your book before you start.

What score do I need to pass?

You need 70% or higher on BOTH the NEC Knowledge portion and the Calculations portion. Failing either portion means retaking the full exam, so balance your study time between code lookup and calculation practice.

How long should I study before taking the exam?

Most candidates need 6–10 weeks of focused study — about 8–10 hours per week. If you are weak on calculations or new to the NEC codebook, plan for the longer end. Start with the free diagnostic quiz to see where you stand before committing to a study plan.

How many questions are on this practice test?

The free diagnostic is 10 questions covering both NEC Knowledge and Calculations. Our full question bank has 800 questions across every exam category — grounding and bonding, conductor sizing, branch circuits, overcurrent protection, motor calculations, and more.
