What is the pass rate for the Texas journeyman electrician exam?
The TDLR Licensing Exam Statistics for FY2024 report a 27.86% pass rate for the Texas journeyman electrician exam — fewer than 3 in 10 candidates pass on a given attempt. Proper preparation makes a significant difference in your chances of passing on the first attempt.
What is the format of the Texas journeyman electrician exam?
As of March 2025, TDLR split the exam into two separately scored portions: 59 NEC Knowledge questions (130 minutes) and 26 Calculations questions (110 minutes). You must pass both portions independently.
Which NEC edition does the Texas exam use?
The Texas journeyman exam currently references the 2026 NEC. TDLR updates the adopted edition periodically — confirm via tdlr.texas.gov before your test date.
Can I bring my NEC codebook to the Texas exam?
Yes, the Texas journeyman exam is open-book. Tabs and highlighting are generally allowed; handwritten notes are not. PSI will inspect your book before you start.
What score do I need to pass in Texas?
You need 70% or higher on BOTH the NEC Knowledge portion and the Calculations portion. Failing either portion means retaking the full exam.
